High-speed CMOS analog Viterbi detector for 4-PAM partial-response signaling Zand, B.; Johns, D. A. Abstract. Publication: IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits. A Smart Modem for Robust Wireless Data Transmission Over ISM Bands ( MHz, MHz, and MHz) by Patrick Butler and Austin Harney Download PDF In the last few years, radio-frequency technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, resulting in a .

Analog Viterbi decoders have recently been shown to be viable alternatives to their digital counterparts. In fact, a commercial analog class-IV partial-response sequence detector for magnetic read channels has already been reported. Analog decoders offer the advantages of reduced power and size primarily due to the elimination of the A/D.   In a known AWGN channel the optimal ML detector of the general CPM signal can be implemented with a bank of matched filters and the Viterbi algorithm. If the carrier phase θ is the only channel parameter, the input signal to the receiver is (10) r (t) = e j ϕ (t) e j θ + w (t) where w (t) is a complex additive white Gaussian noise.

Continuous phase modulation (CPM) is a method for modulation of data commonly used in wireless contrast to other coherent digital phase modulation techniques where the carrier phase abruptly resets to zero at the start of every symbol (e.g. M-PSK), with CPM the carrier phase is modulated in a continuous instance, with QPSK the carrier instantaneously jumps from a . analog performance requirements. However, issues such as how to prevent the deterioration of signal quality during operation owing to errors of interpolating sampling data remain. In this study, we describe a robust read channel employing a novel timing recovery system and a unique Viterbi detector.

Partial-Response Motivation • Rather than equalizing to a Nyquist pulse, equalize to a partial-response signal • Equalize to in DFE example • Less noise boost • More of the impulse response used to determine transmitted signal • Need to look at a string of received symbols rather than symbol-by-symbol detection — MLSD.

Johns, Fellow, IEEE Abstract— In this paper, a 1-Gb/s analog Viterbi detector based on a 4-PAM duobinary scheme is discussed with experi- mental results for a m CMOS implementation.

Following an initial 5 bit analog-to-digital conversion of the ternary waveform, the Viterbi detector is implemented entirely in high-speed digital emitter-coupled logic. An advantage of approximately dB in effective signal-to-noise ratio is gained over a simple level detector, a result which agrees well with the theoretical by: SVENSSON et al.: REDUCED-COMPLEXITY VITERBI DETECTORS I DecislrJn boundary I the transmitted signals sT into the receiver signal space and calculate the distance in this space instead.

A first-year engineering graduate course in communication theory, stochastic processes, or detection and estimation theory would be preferable. As a text for a graduate-level course, the book can be covered in one semester, and with some compromises even in one quarter.

By using partial response (PR) signaling to spread each sub-symbol over multiple subcarriers, we first compress the signal in time.

The signal is then rearranged such that it is possible to stabilize the envelope, improving the PAPR by up to 5 dB without using excessive time-bandwidth resources. Analog Viterbi decoders are finding widespread use in class-IV partial-response disk drive applications. These analog realizations are often used because they are smaller and consume less power.

Kurtas, Member, IEEE, Alex Kuznetsov, Engling Yeo, and Borivoje Nikolic´, Member, IEEE Abstract—The striking benefits of iterative detection have gen- erated strong interest in the disk drive signal processing. The NPML detection is composed of partial response (PR) equalizer and Viterbi detector with noise predictor (noise whitening filter).

The equalizer generates the waveform achieving the specific PR characteristics for removing undesired intersymbol interference (ISI).
